Sharenting :: the habitual use of social media to share news, images, etc of one’s children
Over 1 million children are victims of identify theft each year, costing families an estimated $540 million annually. It's reported that by 2030 “sharenting” will account for 2/3 of all identity fraud. With just a name, DOB and address (easy enough to find in a geotagged birthday party pic on Facebook), hackers can store this info until a person turns 18 and then begin opening accounts.
There is a growing body of research documenting the negative effects of children's activity on social media, but the effects of “sharenting” remain largely unknown. The digital identities we are creating for our children may contradict the identities they will want to cultivate for themselves.
Depression among children (especially teens) is at a high. Adolescents largely find “sharenting” to be embarrassing and useless (according to a 2019 study) and many adolescents want parents to ask for permission before posting. Younger children are not mature enough to make this decision for themselves.
Running a holiday sale or weekly special? Definitely promote it here to get customers excited Every digital photo you take records the date and exact location where the photo was taken. People with bad intentions can find you…your child’s t-ball practice, your regular picnic spot etc. getting a sweet deal.
The worst of the worst, pedophiles are stealing photos of kids lifted from parents’ social media pages, editing and placing them on child sexual abuse imagery sites, pedophile photo-sharing galleries and highly sexualized “child modeling” sites. It’s difficult to even think about this type of digital kidnapping, but it’s happening.
Privacy law has yet to catch up with the latest in social media activity, though there are cases popping up of children suing their parents and family members for breaching their privacy in sharing photos of them online.
It's time to course correct in the pursuit of protecting our children. If you're willing to put your child first and stop sharing photos and videos of them on social media, let us know.
